North Norfolk, late September 2023

We spent a week in our caravan in Norfolk, based at the C&M site at Sandringham. Birding activities included Cley Marshes (NWT), Sculthorpe Moor (H&OT) and Hickling Broad (NWT). We also drove up the nearest part of the Lincolnshire coast and stopped at RSPB Frampton Marsh. It looked to be an excellent site but the howling wind put us off venturing outside of the café.

Cley Marshes

An excellent site, professionally presented with a great café, great views of the Marsh and good hides. The main attraction during our visit was a Long-billed Dowitcher.

Hickling Broad

A site that is somewhat off the beaten track. We took a 1 hr boat tour of the broads and walked round all the hides. Common cranes were visible flying in the middle distance.

Sculthorpe Moor

A site set up by the Hawk & Owl Trust. It is well laid out and highly accessible.  There are bird feeders everywhere, which has led to some poor reviews about the abundance of common garden birds on the reserve. Nevertheless, these feeders also attract Nuthatch, Bullfinch, Coal tit and Marsh tit.  There are well placed Kingfisher ‘posts’ in several spots but no birds were seen on our visit. It was well worth the suggested £8 entry fee.
