Oare, late April and early May 2023

Report of a Penduline tit around the top end of the Oare reserve saw an influx of birders, the sensible ones wearing Wellingtons. 

I didn’t see the bird, but Whitethroats and Linnets were plentiful. 

 



In early May, a quick morning visit, to get another Whitethroat picture, resulted in capturing a brief flyby from a Cuckoo and a Swallow looking very iridescent in the morning sunshine.

 



On the same trip, a pair of Marsh Harriers were having a dispute above the Suice pond.

This was a family holiday, not a birding expedition, so photography was on an 'ad hoc' basis. I shouldn’t have been, but I was stunned by the birding situation in NZ. The introduction of rats, stoats, cats and possums has devastated the native bird life, which evolved without exposure to many natural predators. On top of these challenges, the European settlers introduced an array of familiar birds to out compete the local fauna e.g. Blackbirds, Swallows, Starlings, Song Thrush, Yellowhammers and Mallards.  Really sad to see. Leeds Castle Birds of Prey Centre, early July 2024

I spent an enjoyable day at the Birds of Prey Centre at Leeds Castle, courtesy of a gift from my wife. It may not be birding but I can recommend the day out to any impatient bird photographers who, like me, needs an easy, productive environment in which to practice their skills.  Red Tailed Hawk The Red-tailed Hawk,  Buteo jamaicensis , is a bird of prey commonly found across North America. It is easily recognizable by its characteristic reddish-brown tail, broad wings, and robust body.  These hawks are versatile in their habitats, thriving in diverse environments such as deserts, grasslands, forests, agricultural fields, and urban areas. They primarily hunt small mammals like rodents, but their diet can also include birds, reptiles, and insects.  The estimated population of Red-tailed Hawks is approximately 2.3 million individuals.
