Garden birds, late April and early May 2023

I’ve been hoping to get better shots of the regular birds that visit our feeders, prompted by a rare visit from a Siskin.

Sitting on a chair, covered by camouflage netting didn’t work at all, unsurprisingly.  Sitting in the car with an open window as a bit better, but the trick was to use the car as a hide with camouflage netting hiding myself and the camera.

This was a family holiday, not a birding expedition, so photography was on an 'ad hoc' basis. I shouldn’t have been, but I was stunned by the birding situation in NZ. The introduction of rats, stoats, cats and possums has devastated the native bird life, which evolved without exposure to many natural predators. On top of these challenges, the European settlers introduced an array of familiar birds to out compete the local fauna e.g. Blackbirds, Swallows, Starlings, Song Thrush, Yellowhammers and Mallards.  Really sad to see. Rainy two days in Norfolk, early Jan 2025

Fair to say that the weather was not kind on this trip.  I failed, yet again, to find the Stiffkey Glossy Ibis and the Cranes at Willow Fen. I did see Shorelarks at Holkham but I couldn't get close enough for any sort of photograph.   Highlights were restricted to Fieldfare and Stonechats at Willow Fen. Plus the usual collection of birds on the superb feeders at Sculthorpe Moor.  This time, including a ringed Jay.
