Devon, mid December 2023

Image
I spent another week in East Devon, with a side trip to Slimbridge and Ham Wall , plus stopping off at Ferrybridge and Lodmoor on the way back to Kent. The number of Bewick's swan and other waterfowl had increased markedly on Rushy Pen. No surprise as I believe they feed them once a day.  Ham Wall was essentially a 'write-off' due to flooding. Bewick's swans at Slimbridge Canvasback, Slimbridge Rink necked ducks, Slimbridge Female Sparrowhawk, in the pouring rain at Bowling Green Marsh Ringed Plover and Dunlin, Ferrybridge Common Snipe, Lodmoor Pochard, Slimbridge Red breasted Merganser, Ferrybridge Kingfisher, Seaton Common Goldeneye, practicing its courtship moves at Slimbridge

Waxwings at King's Hill, early December 2023

A first for me. A small number of Waxwings were reported several days in a row at King’s Hill, outside Maidstone, which is about 15 miles away from us.  When we arrived they were not at the location given by Bird Guides, but while were were looking, their location was updated by a birder visiting from London who had spotted them near Waitrose. Fanatasic looking birds.
